Two boys have drowned in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

On Friday, some children were about to go swimming in a river when they saw a body floating in the water, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“The boys alerted the elders who called the police. The body of [one] boy was floating while the other body was still missing under the water,” Manatha said.

Divers were called in to recover the second body.

The two were identified as Axolile Fuba, 10, and Sandisile Peter, 11.

“We appeal to parents to warn children not to swim in the deep rivers and dams,” Manatha said.
