Police were responding to a complaint in the industrial area of Despatch just before 1am when they heard a woman screaming, Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei said.
They rushed to her aid, and when she opened the gate the two policemen caught a man trying to escape over a garden wall.
The woman told the police her husband had just been stabbed, and they arrested the man.
She told police that her family were asleep when she woke to find a man in the couple’s bedroom.
“When the husband stood up, the suspect stabbed him several times in the upper body,” Seekoei said.
The arrested man would appear in court soon, and police were looking for another man suspected of involvement in the crime.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that the woman’s husband died before paramedics arrived.
“His children, aged five and 14, as well as his wife, were found to be severely traumatised… Paramedics stayed at the scene for some time to counsel the bereaved family.”
