194 spoilt ballots in by-elections

Altogether 194 voters spoilt their ballots during Wednesday’s municipal by-elections in 11 wards around the country, according to results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The highest number of spoilt votes was in two wards in the hotly contested Tlokwe (Potchefstroom) municipality.

In Ward 26 there were 39 spoilt votes, followed by Ward 18 with 27 spoilt votes.

The Eastern Cape’s Dutywa Ward 22 and Tlokwe’s Ward Six had 22 spoilt votes each.

Carletonville recorded 20 spoilt ballots, followed by Drakenstein (Paarl) with 18.

Closely behind was Zeerust with 17 spoilt ballots, and Durban with 14.

The lowest number of spoilt ballots was recorded in Giyani, in Limpopo, with six.
