The Road Traffic Management Corporation’s website was hacked yesterday, allegedly by a locksmith.

“Have you ever found yourself locked out of your home in the middle of the night after a long night of partying…,” began what was supposed to be the media update page on the RTMC site.

The blurb further promised that Pennsylvania Locksmiths was the way to go.

The locksmith itself operates under the names of Pennsylvania Locksmiths and Philadelphia Locksmith, and when contacted via e-mail, identified itself as 1 And Only Locksmith. It offered a 24/7 call-out service fee of only $19 (R190) with a 10% online discount, which would have been handy as it is a mere 12 896km away. The locksmith said it is investigating.

When contacted for comment, RTMC acting senior manager for communication Anisha Panday said the corporation’s IT department would also investigate and advise accordingly. Once Panday had been notified by The Citizen, the locksmith’s information and links were removed in a matter of minutes.

It is not yet known how the information was placed on the RTMC website, or what other information had been accessed or compromised.
