Friends executed on way to church, court hears

Three young friends, who were shot dead execution style in an informal settlement on Duffs Road near KwaMashu Men’s Hostel, were on their way to a Zion church, the Durban High Court has heard.

Oluhle Mahiliza, 17, Mphiliseni Mgenge, 21, and Mthokozisi Mzobe, 15, were found lying face down next to each other on a footpath near the Rotary Ground on the morning of September 18, 2011.

Mthokozisi Nkunzemdaka Makhoba, 42, and Sboniso Sbongokuhle Nzuza, 25, from the hostel, last week pleaded not guilty to the three murders. They further pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Smangaliso Mngadi, 16, who was also shot on the night.

In a turn of events, Makhoba pleaded guilty to a count of being in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition. Makhoba said the firearm and its ammunition belonged to Nzuza. He said Nzuza had concealed the firearm and ammunition in his hostel room.

Sixteen-year-old Thabiso Percival Danca testified that they were on their way to a Zion church in B Section, KwaMashu. “I heard a firearm being cocked. After that my friends were ordered to lie down. I then ran away.”

The trial continues.
