Provincial police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu said the dog units from West Rand responded to a call about suspects robbing a cigarette truck in Klerksdorp.

“It is alleged the suspects loaded cigarette boxes on to the quantum kombi and to other vehicles that they were using. They were driving in the convoy from Klerksdorp to Krugersdorp. Police spotted the quantum and noticed that the driver was still wearing hand gloves and started to chase the kombi.

“Five vehicles that were escorting the kombi opened fire at the police, who returned the fire and wounded one of the suspect, who was rushed to the local hospital. Three vehicles were impounded with cigarette boxes. Six suspects were arrested on the scene, and police recovered two jamming devices,” Mngomezulu added.

Police are still searching for the other suspects who fled the scene. The arrested suspects were detained for possession of stolen property.

Meanwhile, Police arrested two armed suspects who robbed a vehicle delivering cigarettes in Muizenberg today.

Four armed suspects robbed the vehicle in Muizenberg at about 11am, spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said.

“While police vehicles in the vicinity were on the lookout for a white Nissan LDV driving in the direction of Mitchells Plain, members of [the] Flying Squad spotted the vehicle on Baden Powell Drive. The occupants were apprehended, and the stolen cigarettes were retrieved,” Traut said.

The two suspects who were in the vehicle were arrested, and the other two suspects remain at large.

“We have reason to believe that the other two suspects, who could have been armed, were dropped off elsewhere. They are yet to be arrested,” Traut said.
The two arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon. The search for the other two men is ongoing, he said.
