Doctors check out Tutu

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will be assessed by his doctors later this afternoon, following his readmission to a Cape Town hospital this week.

“We will give an update after the doctors have seen Arch,” said Benny Gool of Oryx Media which manages Tutu’s public relations.

“He is in very good spirits,” said Gool.

Tutu was readmitted to hospital on Tuesday, a week after he was discharged for a persistent infection.

His daughter Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu had said her father had expressed renewed discomfort and his doctors considered it prudent for him to return to hospital for observation.

“He’ll have a few days of bed-rest while his medical dream team brings the situation under control and determines the next course of action, if any,” she had said.

“He will stay in hospital until the weekend, at least.”
Meanwhile Tutu was visited by former President Thabo Mbeki yesterday.

“The Archbishop and his family were very moved by the support he has received over the past few weeks from people across the world,” his daughter said.

Tutu’s hospitalisation is not related to his prostate cancer condition which has been battling for the last decade.
