Police spokesperson Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said the suspects followed a woman who was about to withdraw money at an ATM on Commissioner Street and attempted to steal her card last week, Krugersdorp News reported.
“Police then followed up on the information concerning the suspects and cornered them. They were taken into police custody and arrested for attempted theft of a bank card,” she added.
The suspects appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court this week. Police investigations are ongoing.
The arrests came after a woman in Krugersdorp, warned residents about two “friendly” men who stole her month’s salary three minutes after “assisting” her at an ATM in a shop along Rustenburg Street in May.
When it was the victim’s turn to use the ATM, she discovered it was not working, as it did not want to accept her card.
It is believed the woman went back to her vehicle to look for another ATM when the man who was standing in the queue behind her approached her and told her the machine was working again.
“He had a card, cash and a slip in his hand,” she said.
“All of a sudden my pin was displayed boldly on the screen,” she added. She repeatedly pressed “cancel”, but her card would not eject. The victim reportedly called the bank to stop her card, which she believed was stuck in the machine at that time, but it was too late. Shortly afterwards, all the money in her account was withdrawn.
The bank confirmed that a withdrawal of her salary was made with her card from a nearby FNB ATM at a Total garage. The incident was captured on CCTV footage.
The transactions were as follows:
• 6.52am (R3 000 withdrawn)
• 6.53am (R3 000 withdrawn)
• 6.54am (R2 000 withdrawn)
