A reaction officer from a private security company was taken to hospital this morning after a shootout with three armed suspects driving a silver BMW on the East Rand.

According to operations manager for Mamba Special Operations Unit, Kevin Norman, the reaction officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in Eastleigh, near Edenvale, Bedfordview Edenvale News reported.

“When the suspects saw Jaconiah, they fled towards Greenstone and he followed,” Norman said.

On Modderfontein Road, one of the passengers in the car opened his door and fired several shots at the officer.

“He swerved to avoid the bullets and hit another vehicle. As the car spun around he hit a second vehicle. The men sped off towards Illiondale on Modderfontein Road,” he added.

The reaction officer was admitted to hospital for treatment.

In another incident, a security guard was shot and wounded during an armed robbery at the New Goodwill store in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, last month.

It is alleged the guard was responding to an alarm complaint and, on arrival, met the suspects who opened fire, wounding him on the head.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The suspects fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash and a video camera.
