Two people, including a police officer, were killed during a shootout with police.

The constable from Themba, north of Pretoria, was responding to a business robbery with a colleague during the early hours of this morning.

When the arrived on the scene, they were confronted by gunfire.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said one of the two suspects was also fatally wounded.

“A second suspect who was in possession of a firearm managed to escape and he is still at large. The police officer was taken to a local hospital where he died on arrival.”

Dlamini said a manhunt has been launched for the other suspect.

Police are also hot on the heels of four suspects who opened fire on a group of tourists outside the Sheraton Hotel in Arcadia, in Pretoria last night, leaving one wounded.

Dlamini said the three people understood to be Congolese nationals were arriving at the hotel from OR Tambo International Airport.

“Before they could enter the hotel premises, they were confronted by the suspects. The suspects fired several shots at them and wounded one in the upper body. They were then robbed of their belongings and the suspects drove away.”

Dlamini said the suspects fled in a silver Audi A3.
