According to his daughter, Reverend Mpho Tutu, the hospitalisation was unrelated to his cancer treatment.
“His oncologist confirms that his PSA level is pleasingly low,” according to Tutu.
Tutu, 83, was discharged from hospital last Tuesday for a persistent infection.
He was re-admitted this afternoon after expressing renewed discomfort.
“His doctors considered it prudent for him to return to hospital for observation.
“He’ll have a few days of bed-rest while his medical dream team brings the situation under control and determines the next course of action, if any,” Reverend Tutu said.
“He will stay in hospital until the weekend, at least.”
Tutu, and his wife Leah, 82, recently renewed their wedding vows on their 60th wedding anniversary. He has been battling prostate cancer for the last decade.
Upon his discharge Tutu said he looked forward to South Africa taking on Bangladesh in the first of two cricket Tests.
