A man was shot on Thursday and left in a critical condition during an armed robbery in Johannesburg believed to have been carried out by the notorious Rolex Gang.

Gauteng police confirmed the man, believed to be in his 50s, was shot on Rivonia Road in Sandton after he and his wife were robbed, Sandton Chronicle reported.

“It is alleged that the victim was parking his vehicle at a rental company when he was approached by four suspects, two of whom were armed,” provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Katlego Mogale said.

Mogale added when the victim realised they were armed, he shot at them and they fired back, injuring him and leaving him in a critical condition.

“Before fleeing the scene, the suspects stole the woman’s watch. A case of attempted murder and armed robbery has been opened.”

While it was thought by some people on the scene that members of the Rolex Gang were involved in the armed robbery, police could not confirm this.

Meanwhile, Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann confirmed Netcare and other emergency services as well as provincial police arrived at the scene on Rivonia Road and found the man, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, in critical condition.

Steinmann said the man was treated on scene and rushed to the nearest hospital
