A hitchhiker was shot in the buttocks when he and an accomplice allegedly tried to hijack a man who gave them a lift in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal, recently.

The motorist, 42, was on his way to the South Coast when he was thumbed down by two men at Isipingo, said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, South Coast Herald.

“When the man stopped the vehicle to let them out at Umzumbe, it appears there was a quarrel over money. One of the hitchhikers took out a firearm and tried to shoot the motorist,” Wiid said.

The driver then took out his own firearm and fired a shot, which hit one of the men in the buttocks. The other fled.

The motorist reported the incident to Port Shepstone police, who then rushed to the scene.

Police found the wounded man and the unlicensed firearm at the scene. He was taken to hospital, and the gun will be sent for ballistics testing.

Investigations are ongoing, and the wounded man is believed to be still recovering in hospital.
