Two suspects who attempted to cross the border into Lesotho with an allegedly stolen vehicle would appear in court for formal bail application on Monday, Free State police have said.

“Two suspects, Martin Boese Matsoso and Benjamin Rochise Khwinana, made their first appearance before the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicle,” said Ladybrand, Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma.

“The case was postponed to the July 20 for a formal bail application and further investigation.”

Matsoso, a 30-year-old Lesotho national, and Khwinana a 25-year-old South African were attempting to cross the border into Lesotho on Tuesday July 7 when police at the Maseru port of entry searched their vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Polo hatchback.

“The said vehicle was thoroughly searched and circulated on the system and it was found that it was stolen in a housebreaking case at Soshanguwe [in] March,” said Xuma.

The suspects were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle to the value of R100 000 and Xuma said the recovered vehicle would be returned to the rightful owner.
