President Jacob Zuma on Friday appointed Mbulaheni Maguvhe, the current acting SABC chairman, to the position permanently and fellow board member Leah Khumalo as his deputy, the presidency said.

The appointments take immediate effect.

“President Zuma has wished Professor Maguvhe and Ms Khumalo all the best in their new responsibilities,” presidential spokesman Harold Maloka said.

The embattled SABC has been without a quorum for months following the resignation of several board members, among them former chairwoman Ellen Tshabalala, and the contested removal of three more namely, Hope Zinde, Rachel Kalidass and Ronnie Lubisi.

It has been without a permanent chair since Tshabalala quit under a cloud in December, after she was found to have lied about her academic qualifications.
