A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Empangeni Regional Court, northern KwaZulu-Natal for raping a 12-year-old girl, police said on Monday.

Major Thulani Zwane said the man was convicted and sentenced on Friday. He said the girl was watching television at her home in October last year and fell asleep. “Later, the accused entered the house and raped her.”

Zwane said a case of rape was opened at Empangeni police station. The victim was able to identify her attacker. Three days after the incident, the man was arrested and charged with rape, Zwane said.

He said the docket was transferred to the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the officers of this unit investigated and gathered all required evidence which led to his conviction.
