Ten people, including nine children, were injured on Monday when the bus they were travelling in veered off the Immona road in Tongaat on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast and crashed, provincial emergency medical services said.

“Ten patients, nine of them children, were injured in the crash. Four of the patients had sustained serious injuries, while the remaining patients had minor injuries,” KZN EMS spokesman Robert Mckenzie said in a statement.

“Reports from paramedics on scene are that the bus reportedly left the road before crashing down an embankment and then hitting a tree. The bus then caught alight. Fortunately every one managed to escape from the burning bus before the fire spread.”

He said the patients were treated on the scene and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
