Baleni voted out as NUM Gen Sec

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) general secretary Frans Baleni has been voted out, after being in this position for close to ten years.

Baleni has been replaced by former NUM’s Free State secretary, David Sipunzi.

Sipunzi won by nine votes at the union’s 15th national congress held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Johannesburg on Friday. Sipunzi won by 354 votes and Baleni received 345.

Baleni had been NUM’s general secretary since 2006.

The NUM’s new leaders are: President Piet Matosa, Deputy President Joseph Montisetse, General Secretary David Sipunzi, Deputy General Secretary William Mabapa, TreasurernDavid Macatha, Health and Safety Chairperson Peter Bailey, Health and Safety Secretary Eric Gcilitshana, Education Chairperson Helen Diatile, and Education Secretary Cliff Tantsi.
