Five men were injured on Thursday when scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Pretoria, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said this happened in the early hours of the morning on Steve Biko Street. She said the scaffolding was between 10 to 15 metres high, Rekord Moot reported.

“When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene, they found the patients scattered on the ground.” Three people were seriously injured, and two others had moderate injuries. They were all treated on the scene before being taken to a hospital. “The exact cause of the incident is unknown,” said Bodasing.

A 72-year-old man died after he fell at least 10 metres through the roof of a building in Langlaagte, Johannesburg.

“It is understood that the man, along with other people, were inspecting parts of the roof when he fell through it. Paramedics found the man sitting on a chair in the building,” ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

According to Vermaak, the man was disorientated, and while paramedics were treating him, his condition suddenly deteriorated. The elderly man was declared dead on the scene.
