The constable was subsequently killed when he opened fire on other police officers after fleeing the scene. Gauteng Police Commissioner Lesitja Mothiba said a woman accompanied by two people, arrived at the Alexandra Police Station to report a case of domestic violence against a police constable from Alexandra police station.
“While the matter was being attended to, the said constable arrived at the station and proceeded to shoot the complainant, the police official – rank of a major, 59 years old- who was assisting the complainant and the two civilians who had accompanied the complainant to the police station,” Mothiba said. “The four died instantly on the scene.”
The constable, 31 years of age, then fled the scene on foot after shooting at, and missing, two police officers. “The incident was immediately reported and the police went out looking for him
On arrival at a spot close to his residence, the constable got out of a taxi then noticed the police and started firing shots at them. The police returned fire, fatally wounding him,” said Mothiba.
The constable – as yet unnamed – was off duty at the time of the incident. An inquest docket has been opened and further investigations are being conducted.
Mothiba added SAPS Employee Health and Wellness personnel were immediately called to the scene to provide counselling to the members present as well as bereaved families.
“This incident came as a huge shock to all of us. Our hearts are with the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased. We are going to conduct a thorough investigation. We have already informed the Independent Police Investigation Directorate, ” said Mothiba.
National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega said there would be an in-depth investigation in order to learn from the incident and ensure it was avoided in the future.
“Domestic violence is a serious issue in society and within the police.”
The people who were killed in a deadly shooting spree have been identified by police.
They were: Major Thomas Moetlo, Sowela Anna Nkuna, Stephina Semenya and Mathews Mabayi.
The police officer who killed the deceased at the police station and was also later shot dead has been identified as Constable Masie. Three murder cases and an inquest are being investigated.
