Hawkers arrested for selling fake CDs and DVDs

A number of hawkers were arrested in Mahikeng for selling counterfeit CDs and DVDs, North West police said on Wednesday.

“Two suspects from Nigeria aged 31 and 22 respectively, a 29- year -old Zimbabwean and a 26- year-old -Mozambique national were arrested by the police in Mahikeng during a sting operation by police and the music industry yesterday [Tuesday],” said police spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko.

He said they all paid R500 admission of guilt fines and their names were recorded on a database for people contravening section 27 of the Copyright Act 98 of 1978.

“Nearly 2,000 counterfeit CDs and DVDs to the value of over R250,000 were found in their possession and seized by police.”
