One suspect has been arrested after a shootout on the M1, near Grayston Drive, in Sandton earlier today.

Provincial spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Sandton police spotted a suspicious red Polo GTI on the corner of Old Pretoria Road and Marlboro Drive. The vehicle then sped off, and police gave chase, Sandton Chronicle reported.

A shootout between the suspects and the police soon ensued as the suspects sped off on to the M1 South highway and lost control of the vehicle after the Grayston off-ramp. One suspect alighted from the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving the arrested suspect behind. The police searched the Polo and found a pistol and ammunition for an AK47. The vehicle is suspected to have been stolen.

Dlamini said the arrested suspect would be charged with attempted murder and for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as a suspected stolen vehicle.

This after two Fidelity security guards were shot and injured in an alleged armed robbery in Lonehill, north of Johannesburg yesterday.

According to chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum Jean Berdou, it is believed the gate to a housing complex was open, and a security guard went to investigate. A white Mercedes drove in, and the guard went to enquire about what the occupants of the vehicle were doing on the property.

Suspects opened fire on the guard. The guard alerted armed response and then ran to the complex manager. The suspects opened fire on the armed response guard too as they fled the scene. A firearm was also stolen.
