A 43-year-old man has been shot and killed on Umlazi Court premises in KwaZulu-Natal after he appeared in court as a key witness for a murder case.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the deceased, Sipho Ndovela, was accosted by three unknown men at the court premises. One of the suspects pulled out his firearm and fatally shot Ndovela. The victim sustained seven gunshot wounds to the body and died instantly. The suspects fled the scene on foot.

In a statement, KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the killing of Ndovela.

“I am deeply shocked by this murder. I find it to be totally abhorrent‚ senseless and inhumane. We condemn it, and we will follow it until there is an arrest and conviction‚” he said on Tuesday.

The provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said she was saddened by the brutal killing of Ndovela.

“I appeal to the members of the community who witnessed the incident or have any information about the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and contact the Umlazi Police Station or call our crime stop number 08600-10111,” she said.

Zwane said Ndovela was a key witness to the murder of his friend Fikile Siyephu‚ who was shot dead at Glebelands hostel in March.

The motive for the killing remains unknown, and no arrest has been made at this stage. Umlazi police have opened a case of murder for further investigation, added Zwane.
