Thirteen children were injured when a bakkie they were travelling in had an accident in Benoni, Johannesburg on Wednesday, reported paramedics.

“It is understood that the driver of the vehicle allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to crash through a residence wall and come to rest against a parked light motor vehicle. The bakkie had apparently been transporting numerous children to school when the collision occurred,” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring.

He said the accident occurred on Albert Street in Rynsoord. “Paramedics, along with other services, arrived at the residence and found the wrecked bakkie up against another vehicle in the yard.”

Meiring said paramedics assessed the children and found that 13 of them, aged between 8 and 12, had sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“Fortunately no-one had sustained any serious injuries.”

The children were treated on the scene, then transported to various hospitals, including Sunshine Hospital.
