A man was critically injured in Pomona, Kempton Park, on the East Rand when a tyre exploded, flinging him several metres, on Tuesday.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said the man, in his 30s, was changing a tyre on a truck when the tyre exploded, Kempton Express reported.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they found the man had sustained severe fractures to both arms as well as a serious head injury. He was treated on the scene before being transported to Arwyp Medical Centre for further treatment.

Last year, an inquest docket was opened after a man was “blown to pieces” when sparks from a grinding machine caused a gas explosion at a truck repair business in Pomona.

“A truck carrying LP Gas was parked in the yard of the business. It was believed the sparks from the machine ignited the gas from the truck and caused an explosion,” an Emer-G-Med paramedics said. The employees were apparently unaware there was still gas inside the truck. Another worker, who suffered moderate head injuries when he was hit by a piece of metal during the explosion, was taken to Tembisa Hospital by provincial emergency services.
