Convicted gospel singer Jub Jub Maarohanye will next week for the third time attempt to apply for bail.

Jub Jub and his friend Themba Tshabalala were found guilty of murder and attempted murder in 2010, following a tragic incident in which they caused the deaths of several schoolchildren while drag racing on a public road.

They were both sentenced to 25 years in jail and Jub Jub has since then twice attempted to apply for bail pending his appeal, but has been denied both times.

Jub Jub’s lawyer, Rudi Krause, confirmed his scheduled court appearance on 13 September to the Daily Sun, saying: “He will be applying for bail pending his appeal. He petitioned the high court and was successful.”

Judge Nico Coetzee, however, told the newspaper that Jub Jub’s grounds for the application are very weak and the reason he has been denied bail thus far.

He said: “There appears to be little, if any, supporting grounds advanced by him.”
