Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said members of the Hawks and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information about the robbery on Friday.
“The members were keeping an observation in Kalgold mine near Setlagole village when suspects driving a white Ford Courier with registration number HWS 029 NW arrived at the mine gate manned by security guards.
“It is alleged that another car, Mercedes Benz Iveco also arrived at the gate immediately after the first one. According to the information received, members of the Hawks and TRT who were part of the operation stopped the cars. It is alleged that the suspects shot at the police who returned fire, and the suspects fled the scene but two of them were arrested immediately.”
He said the dog unit and a police chopper were summoned to the scene to assist in search of the other four men who were later arrested in the bushes.
“No one was reported to be injured during the incident, and a cooper cable worth R30,000 was recovered from the suspects’ vehicles.”
He said the men, aged between 26 and 54, were expected to appear in Setlagole Periodical Court on Tuesday.
