He warned there was a clear agenda to drive the country in the direction of a particular type of capitalism.

“There is a clear agenda to domesticate every organ of people’s power,” Vavi said at the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) conference on socialism in Boksburg yesterday. “There is a clear agenda to hollow out every institution capable of holding the leadership to account.”

He said the time to mobilise against the “elitist” agenda has arrived. “The time is now and there can be no turning back,” said Vavi. “We are going to be on each and every corner of the streets.”

Without mentioning the ANC by name, Vavi said capitalists are the only beneficiaries in the so-called “good story” to tell. “We will be everywhere in South Africa to say we have had enough,” said Vavi.

Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said the ANC-led government had attacked and killed workers on behalf of capital. “At Marikana and in the farmworkers’ strike in the Western Cape, the armed forces of the state intervened in support of the owners of capital.

“In both instances the result was the murder of workers whose only crime was to refuse to sell their labour for less than a living wage.

“In the case of Marikana, the armed forces of the state slaughtered African mineworkers in the interests of global and SA white monopoly mining capital.”

Jim also said the ANC, SA Communist Party and Cosatu alliance was dysfunctional. “Dominant right-wing forces isolate or purge those who are perceived to be against neo-liberals. Although there are protests everywhere and every day in the country, the alliance does not provide leadership to these struggles.”
