A shootout between security personnel and suspected illegal miners ensued after the body of an illegal miner was found in a mine shaft in Benoni, on the East Rand.

According to Benoni police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ramothakhi Maqabe, the man was shot several times in the upper section of his body at about 9pm, Benoni City Times reported.

“When security personnel arrived on the scene, they were shot at by illegal miners, which resulted in them returning fire,” said Maqabe.

No one was injured or killed during the shootout. A case of murder is currently being investigated, and no arrests have yet been made.

Last week, two illegal miners were shot and wounded during a police raid at an RDP house in the Chris Hani area of Daveyton, on the East Rand.

“The members surrounded the house, while some went inside, and found 11 illegal miners aged between 30 and 50 busy refining gold,” police spokesperson,” Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele said.

Two of the illegal miners ran towards a police officer and pointed a gun and knobkerrie at him. The officer then fired shots and wounded both men.

“One suspect was shot in the lower body and the other in the upper body,” said Sekele.
