A suspected robber has been shot and injured, and two of his accomplices are still at large after they stormed a house in Barberton, Mpumalanga.

It is alleged the three armed men broke into a house on Steyn Street. They assaulted and robbed the occupants last night, Barberton Times reported.

Kitty Lamprecht said she was on her way to the kitchen at about 7pm when she saw three armed men entering through the front door.

In the house were her parents-in-law, husband, Hein and his 16-year-old daughter.

“I screamed and fled down the hallway towards the master bedroom, where I pressed the panic button for armed response. Hein was exercising in the room at the time,” added Lamprecht.

One of the suspects remained near the front door to keep watch while the other two went through the house searching for valuables.

“Hein was then beaten and tied up with an electric cord,” said Lamprecht.

When the Hi-Tech security guards arrived on the scene, the robbers opened fire and a shootout ensued, where one of the robbers was shot in the stomach.

They took the bakkie’s key, handbag, cellphones and a tablet, added Lamprecht.

ER24 arrived on the scene, and the wounded suspect was stabilised and taken to Barberton General Hospital. The other two suspects managed to run away.

On Monday, a suspected house robber was shot dead during a shootout in Strathavon in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the three suspects robbed a house in a complex on Linden Street in Strathavon just before 8am.

Dlamini added the victim pressed the panic button and notified authorities. One suspect jumped over the walls of other complexes in the area. The suspects stole a laptop, jewellery and money.

Bramley police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said one suspect was shot.
