Two arrested for illegal diamond dealing

Two men were arrested in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, after they were caught trying to sell diamonds to a British tourist, Gauetng police said on Wednesday.

”Police followed on a tip off on Tuesday and traced the men to a shopping centre in Orange Farm. They were found in possession of several diamond rocks and an SA Police Service (SAPS) certificate of appointment,” said spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

The tourist managed to flee as soon as he realised that police were approaching, he said.

The two, aged 36 and 42 are expected to appear in the Vaal magistrate’s court soon to face charges of illegal dealing in diamonds and illegal possession of a police appointment certificate.

None of them is a police officer, Makhubela said.
