Four people have been found dead in a shack in the Khayelitsha informal settlement near Ibika Township in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, following a fire.

Police confirmed the bodies were found on Sunday at about 10pm.

“It is alleged that a 60-year-old woman, a 53-year-old woman, her six-year-old granddaughter and a 43-year-old man were fast asleep in their shack when the cruel fire killed them,” said police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Msobomvu police near Butterworth have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.”

Manatha added the identification of the deceased would be withheld until their next of kin were informed of their deaths.
