Ten people were killed and a further 12 injured on the N1 in Limpopo on Friday in what paramedics have described as a horror collision.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find a taxi and a bakkie had collided into one another. Debris from both vehicles was sprawled across the highway as the vehicles themselves were in flames.

It is understood members of the public had already begun extinguishing the fires.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics discovered the bodies of 10 patients, one of them a young child.

“Two of the deceased were found trapped in the bakkie, while the remaining eight were found trapped in the taxi and lying outside of the vehicle,” said Meiring

“Unfortunately nothing more could be done for these patients,” added Meiring.

“Rescue services had to later use the jaws-of-life to free the deceased patients’ bodies from the vehicles.”

Twelve other patients were found on the scene, six of them were critically injured.

“Paramedics began their treatment of the critically injured patients, providing them with advanced life support. One of the critically injured patients was later flown to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.”
