Three people have died, and 12 have been injured after a taxi lost control and crashed into a building on Dinkelman Highway, near Claremont.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the taxi had somehow lost control and crashed through a fence into a building yesterday afternoon.

Rescue Care operations director Garrith Jamieson said many of the passengers had been ejected from the vehicle and were found scattered around the wreckage.

“Paramedics called for more ambulances as well as advanced life support units to assist with the mass casualty scene. Three people had passed away before paramedics could arrive, and a further 12 had sustained various injuries,” he said.

“Four of the 12 sustained serious injuries, and once all of the injured had been stabilised they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required.”

He added the police’s Collision Unit had been on the scene and would investigate further.
