According to police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu, police responded to a robbery at a bakery inside the station at about 5am.
“About 10 suspects fled when the officers arrived, and a chase ensued to the nearby Wanderers rank,” Mngomezulu told The Citizen.
He added some of the suspects fled on foot, while others got into a car. At Wanderers, the suspects opened fire on the police, killing the officer. The suspects also managed to steal the deceased officer’s state-issued firearm before fleeing the scene.
Mngomezulu added the suspects were still at large, and no arrests had been made yet.
In another incident, a 44-year-old police officer was shot dead by two suspects as he was standing next to his car with his girlfriend near Tzaneen, Limpopo earlier this month.
“[He] was shot three times in the head and chest before the suspects fled,” added provincial spokesperson Ronel Otto.
The motive for the attack was not known.
