A case of child neglect is under investigation, and an inquest docket has been opened after a five-year-old child and a 17-month-old baby were trapped in a burning house in Krugersdorp on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Both children were reportedly treated for smoke inhalation at Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, where they later died, Krugersdorp News reported.

It is believed the children’s mother had locked them in the house before she left. Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale said a police officer passing the street saw what happened and immediately called the fire department.

“The officer went back to the house and saw two children asleep inside. With the help of community members, they broke some windows and rescued the children,” said Mashale.

The fire is believed to have started in the living room. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

This after a house in Waterkloof, Pretoria burned to the ground on Thursday night, while the family was reportedly away on holiday.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said it is believed lighting might have been the cause. It is alleged nearly the entire roof burned down.
