A Waterkloof family in Pretoria, currently away on holiday, is likely to be devastated upon their return after their house burnt to the ground on Thursday night.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said it is believed lighting might have been the cause, Record East reported.

It is alleged nearly the entire roof burned down.

“We managed to break open the garage door and remove a vehicle that was inside. The only unit that did not completely burn down was the cottage house adjacent to the house,” added Pieterse.

Pieterse said the owners of the house are apparently on holiday and have not been informed yet. Firefighters gained control of the fire at 10pm yesterday, Pieterse added.

Last month, an elderly couple died when their house caught fire in Pietermaritzburg.

Paramedics arrived at the scene in the Oribi area at about 2.30am and found firemen battling the blaze, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

“After the fire was extinguished, medics found the two elderly people had tragically died in the blaze,” added Botha.

Botha said the cause of the fire was investigated by police.
