The Vryheid Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a 48-year old man to 12 years’ imprisonment for murder.

It is alleged on June 2, 2010 at about 9pm the victim, Mbuyiseni Moloi, 38, was at his house in Block C, Mondlo just outside Vryheid when he was approached by six suspects.

Moloi was taken by force into the suspects’ vehicle and drove away towards Ngunyini Farm, near Mondlo where his hands and legs were tied up, said police. Police added Moloi was assaulted, as he was accused of stealing a cow from the accused. He died instantly after sustaining injuries to his body.

“The body was loaded into the same vehicle and dumped in Mkhumbini area, where it was found the next morning by the community members, and a case of murder was opened at Mondlo Police Station,” said police.

The investigation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the accused and his five sons. Later, a case against his sons was withdrawn, and Siyaya stood the trial until he was convicted and sentenced on Tuesday.

In a separate incident, the Durban Regional Court sentenced a 20-year-old man to 30 years’ imprisonment for murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Siyabonga Xulu stabbed a woman at SJ Smith Hostel on December 13, 2014 at about 2.30pm. The woman died on the scene as a result of her injuries. Xulu also stole two cellphones from the scene, said investigating officer Warrant Officer Rico Naidoo.

Naidoo said the following day, one of the stolen cellphones was recovered in Fuyeni, in Empangeni. Xulu appeared in court and pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday, March 5.
