KZN woman shot in the head

A 28-year-old man is expected to appear in the Hluhluwe Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday after he allegedly shot and killed a 21-year-old woman.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the alleged incident happened on the R22, near a petrol station, in Hluhluwe at about 10.15pm on Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle with two men thought to be her friends, Zululand Observer reported.

The suspect, who was reportedly sitting directly behind the woman then allegedly shot her by in the back of the head by accident, killing her instantly. It is believed the firearm used in the incident was unlicensed.

“The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage. Hluhluwe police arrested the 28-year-old male, and he will be charged for murder,” Zwane said.

In another incident, a 20-year-old woman was shot in the head and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, in Soweto last month. According to police, the woman and her boyfriend went to an open field near his house.

“They had a quarrel, and the boyfriend [allegedly] took out a gun and shot her in the head,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The man is said to have gone on the run, and police were searching for him.
