“There hasn’t been anything new,” said Lt-Col Katlego Mogale. Three men, two women and a girl, 2, were killed and four others were critically wounded during a shooting at Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement at around 9.20pm on Saturday. One of the wounded died on the way to hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.
Mogale said a group of about 15 people armed with pistols and rifles shot at a group of people standing at a spaza shop in the area. The motive for the shootings was unclear. They were searching for the suspects.
Three surviving victims are reportedly recovering in the Far East Rand Hospital, Benoni City Times reported.
Police suspect this incident is linked to illegal mining, with a source saying the owner of the tuck shop, who died in the incident, gave refuge to illegal miners.
A Chief Albert Luthuli Park resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he heard gunshots for about 10 minutes on the night of the shooting.
The man visited the scene later that night and said he saw a lot of blood inside and outside the shack.
The public has been urged to come forth with any information regarding this incident by calling the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111.
