The Organised Crime Unit of the Hawks in Mahikeng, North West has arrested seven suspects in connection with drug dealing and drug trafficking.

This is the outcome of a 10-month operation that investigated the organised crime syndicate, specialising in drug dealing and trafficking. The suspects were arrested yesterday in Mahikeng, Lichtenburg and Vryburg, and were mostly Nigerian nationals aged between 27 and 35, police said.

One of the suspects was arrested during the operation after being found in possession of dagga.

Various drugs such as 504g of CAT, crystal meth, cocaine and 260 mandrax and ecstacy tablets with an estimated street value of R141 000 were seized, added police.

It was during the operation that three cars to the value of R335 000 were also confiscated, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed the suspects received the drugs from Hillbrow and would then be distributed to dealers for supply in their operational areas.

All suspects are expected to appear at various Magistrates’ Courts in Mmabatho, Lichtenburg and Vryburg today and on Monday, where they will be facing charges of drug dealing and drug trafficking.

In a separate incident, a Durban police officer was arrested in China for alleged drug trafficking.

“We were informed that [Sergeant Busisiwe Zungu] was arrested in Hong Kong two weeks ago,” said Major Thulani Zwane.

Zwane added no further information was provided.
