UPDATE: Sandton ‘hijacker’ in hospital under police guard

The unidentified man beaten by community members for allegedly stealing a car in Sandton, Johannesburg yesterday remains under police guard in hospital.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela told The Citizen the man has been admitted in hospital after he sustained head injuries and was under police guard.

Maphakela added once the suspect was discharged from hospital he would appear in court for attempted theft of motor vehicle.

In the video, the suspect is seen being beaten by a number of people, with one passerby getting visibly upset and throwing a brick at the man. Shortly afterwards, police are seen arriving at the scene.

Two other suspected hijackers involved yesterday are still on the run.
