According to police spokesperson Captain Joep Joubert, the hijacking took place at about 10.45am, near Entrance Six of Mall@Carnival, Brakpan Herald reported.

“A 64-year-old wheelchair-bound man was approached by the suspect, who then threatened him with a knife,” Joubert said.

The suspect allegedly got into the man’s white Volkswagen Polo and drove off. Joubert added that members of the community who witnessed the hijacking managed to stop the vehicle.

“They pulled the keys from the ignition and tried to arrest the suspect, but he evaded arrest,” he said.

The suspect was apprehended by security guards, who then handed him over to police. The man faces a charge of hijacking.

Last week, three suspected hijackers were arrested after crashing into a tree in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Two unlicensed firearms and a hijacked Volkswagen Jetta were recovered.

Video footage of the suspects’ bid to evade police was captured by a dashboard camera. In the footage, the suspects are seen racing through Rosebank with police in pursuit before crashing into a tree.
