Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said a group of boys apparently tried to cross the river on Saturday, South Coast Herald reported.

Wiid added the search had to be called off because of the dark and the strong currents.

The search resumed on Sunday morning.

“Search and rescue dog Chazz signalled his handler, and Warrant Officer Wiid was sent into the water. A short while later the body of the teenager was retrieved from the water,” said Wiid.

Last month, an 11-year-old boy drowned in a river near the N12 in Klerksdorp, North West.

“Two boys were playing and chasing each other when the one stepped on a log, which caused him to lose his balance, and he fell into the river,” Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said.

He was declared dead on the scene at about 3pm.
