Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) spokesperson Frik van Zyl said the suspect was fiddling with a bakkie parked at a house on Adam Street, Mindalore, between 2 and 3am on Saturday morning, Roodepoort Record reported.

The bakkie belonged to an elderly man, who confronted the suspect when he heard the commotion outside. The suspect proceeded to shoot at the resident, inflicting wounds to his leg and side, Van Zyl said.

The elderly man retaliated with gunfire. The suspect was shot and killed.

Mindalore Block Watch patroller Tom Smith and patrol manager Pierre Pretorius were first to react to the scene as they heard gunshots from nearby.

A second suspect allegedly fled by jumping over the neighbour’s wall.

The elderly man is reportedly recovering at Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital.

Last month, a house robber was shot dead by police, while the other was arrested at a house in Terenure, Kempton Park.

It is believed police had been looking for a stolen vehicle linked to various crimes.

The suspect who was shot died behind the steering wheel of the alleged stolen car.
