Westonaria police spokesperson Sergeant AT Sefara said three women were walking along a street and were followed by three men at about 11.15pm last Friday. The men then grabbed them from behind and began searching them, demanding their cellphones and money, Randfontein Herald reported.
The victims told police the suspects were armed with a knife and a panga – one of them wore a balaclava.
Sefara said one of the men tried to stab one of the women as he thought she was reluctant to give him her cellphone.
“Shortly after the woman handed him her cellphone, the man armed with a panga proceeded to drag her to the side of the road while the two other women managed to escape,” said Sefara.
“The woman’s pants were unzipped and she was thrown to the ground and her sneakers were taken by one of the men. The suspect with the balaclava was about to rape her when a police vehicle arrived and arrested the suspect and seized the panga.”
Investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, two men were arrested last month for raping two women in Diepsloot, in the north of Johannesburg.
The suspects confronted the women using a toy gun and forced them into a veld and raped them, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said.
