A case of murder is under investigation after the decomposing body of a psychiatric patient believed to be in his 40s was found in his home in Crestholme, Durban, on Thursday afternoon.

The man’s body was reportedly discovered by a friend who went to the house after unsuccessfully trying to contact him numerous times, Highway Mail reported.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndumiso Manqele said the friend entered the house through an unlocked door and noticed a strange odour inside. After searching the house he found the man dead in a cupboard.

Manqele added there were no visible signs of injury on the man’s body and that investigations were ongoing.

In a similar incident, the decomposing body of a gardener was found in the ceiling of a house in Moreleta Park, Pretoria, in December last year.

The body was believed to have been hidden in the ceiling for almost a week prior to its discovery by a family member.

According to the family member, the man’s body had a rope tied around the neck. Foul play was suspected, as the man reportedly had blood on his T-shirt.
