An investigation is under way to determine what might have led to the death of a boy at Tongaat Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal.

Sizwe Bewu (7) fell from the school’s second floor on Monday, North Coast Courier reported.

Bewu had been playing with friends when he fell down two floors and hit his head on the ground.

He suffered serious head injuries and had to be airlifted to hospital.

Provincial Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi confirmed Bewu died on Thursday afternoon.

“On behalf of the MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, we pass on our condolences to the family and everyone affected,” said Mahlambi.

“The MEC is calling for calm from all parents and asks them not to panic with regards to school safety.”

Mahlambi added that the department regretted what happened, but “at the end of the day it was just a terrible accident”.

In a separate incident, a boy died at the Mabande Secondary School in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, in October last year.

The provincial education department confirmed the boy was shot after school, while pupils were about to go home.
