Man allegedly beat wife, killed newborn

Residents from a block of flats in Pretoria West are reeling in shock after a man allegedly beat his wife with their two day-old baby.

Police have confirmed the man was arrested and will face charges of murder and assault.

Spokeswoman Wanda Oliver said it’s alleged the couple were arguing and the man hit his wife with the newborn.

Best Care Ambulance service spokesman Xander Loubscher, said paramedics arrived on scene to find the child drowning in vomit and covered with a towel.

“The mother claimed the father asked about the paternity of the baby, then grabbed the baby by its feet and hit her on the head. She said he then hit the newborn on the floor.”

Loubscher said the child was stabilized on scene and rushed to Kalafong hospital.

The infant died shortly after arrival.

The woman was also treated at hospital for a minor injury to her head.

Oliver said the man was arrested and would appear in court this week.
