The 2015 State of the Nation address was one for the books. Here are four key things that happened leading up to President Jacob Zuma’s speech.

1. Andile Mngxitama was attacked

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Andile Mngxitama was attacked by members of the party at the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town today. The scuffle broke out when Mngxitama was about to address the media in a press conference he had called.  Later EFF MP Floyd Shivambu tweeted:

2. DA MP arrested

As politicians and other high profile figures strut their stuff on the red carpet just before the State of the Nation address, members of the DA were arrested, allegedly with force, while protesting, allegedly peacefully, in Cape Town.

3. Cellphone signals jammed

The SA National Editors Forum (Sanef) condemned the jamming of cellphone signals inside the National Assembly ahead of President Jacob Zuma’s eighth state-of-the-nation address on Thursday. Around 25 journalists launched a protest in the press gallery of the National Assembly on Thursday evening over not having any cellphone reception to file their stories.

4. DA boycotts SONA red carpet

The DA earlier announced that it would boycott the red carpet activities scheduled around the State of the Nation address. DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane said the party’s supporters arrived as a group and clashed with the police.
